Senad Alic (1960), Sarajevo (Bosnia)Senad Alic lives in Amsterdam since 1992.Exhibitions: the Netherlands, Turkey, Italy, Former Yugoslavia, Poland, Korea, Austria, France and Belgium. In the past few years Alic created a series of paintings bearing the same title: ‘The aquarium is broken‘. He painted images that invite and even force us to read the whole story, to actually live it and tell it to others in our own words. The figures Alic paints become part of a purely artistic search. They almost dissolve into their backgrounds and are defined more abstractly in subdued fields of color and alternating contours. One feels melancholy looking at them, but the artist’s sense of humor and his optimism are always tangible. The colors are never disagreeable or garish, yet they are not simply pleasant, because the images are still somewhat uncomfortable, and despite the down-to-earth title there’s always an inherent feeling of something threatening. They are layered stories, portrayed in a subtle artistic language.
